«PECTEN MIRIFICUS. Pect. testa, trigono-orbiculari, flabelliformi, tenuicula, aequilaterali, inaequivalvi, valva sinistra concavo-plana, costis quinque distantibus grandisquamatis radiatis, costa esquamata prope marginem intercurrente, valva dextra convexa, decemcostata, costis ad summitatem angustis et obtuse muricatis; vivide carminea, aureo-luteo lentiginosa, ad umbones pallidiore; auriculis subaequalibus.
THE STRANGE PECTEN. Shell triangularly orbicular, fan-shaped, rather thin, equilateral, inaequivalve, left valve concavely flattened, rayed with five distant large-scaled ribs, with a scaleless rib between them near the margin, right valve convex, ten-ribbed, ribs narrow and obtusely prickly along the summit; bright carmine, freckled with golden-yellow, paler at the umboes; ears nearly equal. Hab. Amboyna. A very singular species, remarkably distinct from any hitherto described.» LOVELL AUGUSTUS REEVE, 1853

«Description. — Shell up to 40 mm high, most specimens to c. 30 mm, rather thin, somewhat posteriorly oblique and roundly triangular, strongly inequivalve, inequilateral, left valve almost flat, right valve inflated, auricles somewhat unequal in shape and size, umbonal angle c. 90˚; intenal rib carinae present; colour highly variable, cream, yellow, red, purple, brownish to almost black, some specimens mottled; interior porcelanous, somewhat paler than exterior; resilial teeth weak or lacking, dorsal teeth prominent. Left valve sculptured with 4-5 distinct primary radial costae, one secondary costa intercalated in each interspace on most specimens, very weak or lacking on some. Primary costae bearing widely spaced, thorn-like, curled scales, variable in prominence; lacking on secondary costae. Primary and secondary costae unevenly spaced. Very closely spaced, fine commarginal microsculpture throughout. Posterior auricle somewhat larger than anterior, with one scaly radial costa; costa weaker on anterior auricle. Hinge line straight. Right valve with 7-9 unevenly spaced radial costae (4 main costae more or less bifurcated); secondary costae lacking. Anterior auricle with 4-6 radial costae, lacking or very weak on posterior; dorsal margin scaly. Byssal notch moderately deep, byssal fasciole broad. Functional ctenolium with 4-6 well-developed teeth.
Distribution. — Tropical Indo-West Pacific and Hawaiian Islands, from southern Japan to Indonesia and the Coral Sea (not recorded from Australia), westward into the Indian Ocean to Thailand and eastward into the Pacific to the Easter Islands (Raines & Poppe, 2006: 130; Raines, 2010: 610). Present specimens from the Philippines alive at 62-90 m (minimum depth range). Living byssally attached to hard substrates or amongst coral rubble on sandy bottoms. Remarks. — For comparison with congeneric species see Dijkstra & Kilburn (2001: 285).» DIJKSTRA, H. H. 2013. «DISTRIBUTION. — Southern Japan, China, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Coral Sea, New Caledonia, Fiji and Hawaiian Islands (MNHN, coll. HD, unpubl. data). Depth range 37-183 m (alive) (coll. HD, unpubl. data). Now also Austral Islands (new record), alive at 50-230 m depth.
REMARKS The present specimens are similar to the holotype from the Moluccas, although the radial lirae are slightly weaker and the colour more creamy. However, examined material from the southwestern Pacific is rather variable in sculpture and colour and the specimens from the Austral Islands fall within this variation range.» DIJKSTRA, H. H. & P. «Discussion: Mirapecten tuberosus most closely resembles M. mirificus (Reeve, 1853), but differs from the latter species in its more orbicular shape, M. mirificus being more obliquely orbicular. Also, the LV in M. tuberosus is slightly convex, in M. mirificus it is flat; the posterior auricles in M. tuberosus are usually smaller than in M. mirificus; M. tuberosus has a more prominent sculpture of scales and vesicles, and the shell is thicker; M. mirificus has a weaker sculpture of smaller erect scales, which are sometimes even absent.»
