DISTRIBUTION. — Known only from the Coral Sea, New Caledonia Loyalty Ridge and Vanuatu. Alive in 210-620 m, valves to 900 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell height to 30.9 mm; elongate ovate, slightly oblique, moderately thin, almost equivalve, the Iv slightly more convex than the rv; auricles comparatively small, the umbonal posterior fold extending further down the posterior margin than the anterior fold; umbo prominent, pointed terminally. Lv sculpture of ca 60 fine, rounded, densely imbricated radial ribs at the umbos, intercalating to over 120 at the margins; ornamention of the ribs and interstices of short, densely imbricated spines; internal excavation under the hinge plate only very slight; margin evenly crenulate. Rv convex, shallower than lv, deeper umbonally; sculpture of concentric foliations near attachment area, remaining area with fine, radial, densely imbricated ribs; attachment area large; internal excavation under hinge plate shallow; external ribs obscurely visible internally; margin evenly crenulated. Colour white internally and externally.
Measurements of holotype: Height 30.9 mm, width 23.7 mm, depth of pv 17.5 mm. The type series from VOLSMAR, sta. DW05 includes specimens attached either to rock or the inside of the lower valves of dead specimens. In the latter case, the lower valves of three dead specimens were found cemented successively inside each other with a live specimen living inside the third specimen. REMARKS. — Spondylus proneri most closely resembles S. gussonii from the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic (see Fig. 5 H) and S. exiguus, in being small in size and profile and can also be compared with juvenile specimens of S. mireilleae in colour and shape. For comparisons between S. proneri and those species, see Table 7.
ETYMOLOGY. — Named after Raymond PRONER, who has, as captain of the Dawa and officer on Alis, assisted in innumerable collecting trips and dredging expeditions in New Caledonia.»

«Distribution
Coral Sea, New Caledonia, Loyalty Ridge, Vanuatu and (new records) Middleton Reef, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and Macauley Island, Kermadec Islands, 210–960 m; taken alive at 210–620 m (Fig. 67). Remarks
The specimens from Middleton Reef, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island are perfectly accordant with the original description and illustration of this distinctively sculptured species. This is a new record for the NZEEZ.» DIJKSTRA, H. H. & B. A. MARSHALL. 2008. The recent Pectinoidea of the New Zealand region (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Propeamusiidae,Pectinidae and Spondylidae).
