«P. testa ovata, conica, tenui, alba, maculis roseis irregulariter sparsis ornata, radiatim late costata; costis novenis, quadripartitis, squamulis tenuibus, regularibus ornatis, auriculis inaequalibus; antica majore septem radiata, postica multo breviore.

«Description. — Shell up to c. 20 mm high, moderately flattened, some specimens more inflated, with curved ventral margin, almost circular to oblong, inequivalve (ribbing of valves discrepant), inequilateral, auricles very unequal in shape and size, umbonal angle c. 90˚; cream with pink or brown maculations, right valve paler. Left valve with 9-13 prominent radial costae and 1-3 intercalated secondary riblets, one of which is dominant, in each radial interspace. Costae bearing irregular lamellae, slightly noduliferous on some specimens. Interspaces bearing commarginal lamellae. Anterior auricle much larger than posterior (c. 3:1), sculptured with 4-6 lamellate, noduliferous radial costae; posterior auricle almost smooth. Right valve with 9-13 prominent radial costae, subdivided into 3-4 lamellate secondary riblets, interspaces each narrower than one costa, commarginally lamellate. Anterior auricle with 5-7 noduliferous and/or lamellate radial riblets, less prominent than on left valve. Posterior auricle nodulous. Hinge line straight. Byssal notch relatively deep, byssal fasciole broad. Functional ctenolium with 3-5 teeth. Resilifer oblique-triangular oblong.
Distribution. — Throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific, from southern Japan to northern Australia, westwards into the Indian Ocean to South Africa and Mozambique, and eastwards into the central Pacific to the Tuamotu Archipelago (Raines & Poppe, 2006: 116; Raines, 2010: 606). Present specimens from the Philippines dead at 5-410 m. Living byssally attached to undersides of coral slabs amongst live coral or amongst coral rubble on sandy bottoms. Remarks. — The present material closely resembles topotype specimens from Réunion (MNHN, ZMA), although the sculpture is more delicate (typical material has c. 10 prominent primary radial costae, present material 13) with more divided secondary radial riblets. Examined material from the Indo-West Pacific is strongly variable and intermediate variations are observed (MNHN, ZMA). E.A. Smith (1903: 621) described the new species Pecten cooperi from the Maldives, but it is indistinguishable from E. elegantissima. He probably overlooked Deshayes’ description of the right valve and Bavay’s subsequent description of the left valve, some time before his description of P. cooperi. A closely related species is G. quadrilirata (Lischke, 1870), with a similar distribution. It differs from G. elegantissima in its quadri- or tripartite radial costae and more delicate commarginal sculpture.» DIJKSTRA, H. H. 2013. «Distribution and ecology.— Throughout the western, southwestern and central Pacific and the western Indian Ocean. The habitat and behaviour of this species are poorly known, although most of the material was collected from littoral to sublittoral depth on sandy bottoms with coral rubble or sediments. This species is a new record for Indonesia.
Remarks.— E.A. Smith (1903: 403) overlooked the description of the right valve of G. elegantissima by Deshayes, and the subsequent description by Bavay, some time before his description of P. cooperi. A closely related species is Glorichlamys quadrilirata (Lischke, 1870), known from the same geographic region, which differs by quadrior tripartited radial costae and a finer sculpturing of the concentric lamellae. Another closely related species is Glorichlamys elegans (Wang, 1983) from China, recently also known from the Philippines (HHD). Wang (1983: 532) placed this species in Bractechlamys, but the outline and tripartite costae are more similar to Glorichlamys.» DIJKSTRA, H. H. 1991. «1903. Pecten cooperi Smith in J. S. Gardiner, "Fauna & Geogr. Maldive & Laccadive Archipelagoes," vol. ii, part 2, p. 621, pl. xxxvi, figs. 15-18.
Specific characters:— Shell small, thin, compressed, equivalve, sub-equilateral; height considerably in excess of length; both valves with very small posterior and large anterior ears. Right valve with about 12 costae, rather irregularly distributed, at first bifurcating, subsequently becoming, near the ventral margin, tri- or quadripartite; coste crossed by fine, close-spaced, concentric, thread-like ridges; intercostal spaces deep and naffow; anterior ear with about 8, posterior ear with about 4, finely serrated riblets; byssal notch not very deep; ctenolium with 5 teeth. Left valve with 9 narrow, salient principal costa, fairly symmetrically distributed, the central ones more widely spaced than the lateral ones, with secondary coste intercalated mesially between them, and with traces of fine tertiary costae near the central region of the ventral margin; all the costa transversely ridged, the primary ones more strongly than the secondary ones; anterior ear with three primary ridged riblets, and secondary ones between them, posterior ear with about two very fine, serrated riblets. Interior of shell with ribs distributed according to the external ornament; hinge-area narrow, finely striated perpendicularly to the margin; cardinal crura not developed.
Distribution:— Recorded living only from the type-locality, the Maldive Islands; Pleistocene (Azanian) of Zanzibar (see p. 96). Pemba locality:— 81. Material:— One left valve (L. 43823). Dimensions:— Length 14mm., height 17mm. Remarks:— The Pemba example is slightly larger than the hototype (in the British Museum (Zool. Dept.) Collection), but of about the same proportions, the difference in the size of the ears being well shown. Since apparently the holotype is the only example hitherto known, the discovery of this species fossil in Pemba and Zanzibar is of considerable interest.» COX, L. R. 1927. «PECTEN (CHLAMYS) ELEGANTISSIMUS, Deshayes.
(PI. VIII, fig. La diagnose modifiée devient : P. testa ovata, conica, tenui, (valva dextra) alba, maculis roseis irregulariter sparsis ornata, radiatim late costata, costis novenis, quadripartitis, squamulis tenuibus, regularibus ornatis, auriculis inaequalibus; antica majore septem (ad novem) radiata, postica multo breviore. Vu trois exemplaires complets.» BABAY, A. 1903.
