«Sottogen. Praechlamys subgen. n.
Specie-tipo: Pecten (Chlamys) inaequialternans Parona, 1889, p. 89, tav. 6, fig. 7a-b. Julico. Lombardia.
DERIVATIO NOMINIS. Prae: innanzi - Chlamys (gen. femminile).
DISTRIBUZIONE DEL SOTTOGENERE. Triassico; cosmopolita. DIAGNOSI. |

ANDREA ALLASINAZ, 1972
«Although Praechlamys Allasinaz, 1972, was considered as a genus by some authors (e.g., Waller & Marincovich, 1992; Monari, 1994; Szente, 1996; Damborenea, 2002a), it was originally proposed as a subgenus of Chlamys. Other authors (e.g., Posenato, 2008b) still regard it as a subgenus of Chlamys, while Hautmann (2001b) questioned its validity altogether, since, in his opinion, the type of ornamentation is not an important taxonomic character at subgenus level. But Allasinaz (1972) used mainly differences in ornamentation to separate the subgenera C. (Chlamys), C. (Praechlamys), and C. (Granulochlamys). Until this controversy is solved, Praechlamys is here taken in its original sense. It is necessary to establish the diagnostic characters that define each taxon, because the diagnosis given by Allasinaz (1972) was too lax (Damborenea, 2002a). Some of the Triassic species traditionally attributed to Chlamys could fit into Praechlamys if considered at generic level, with an emended diagnosis, but other species are difficult to accommodate in other genera, and therefore a new taxon is required for them (Damborenea, 2002a).
As this discussion is beyond the scope of this paper, Chlamys is considered in a broad sense and present in the Triassic, but this is just a temporary solution for a group that has been particularly problematic since its conception.» ROS-FRANCH, S., A. «The oldest undoubted members of the family Pectinidae that have a ctenolium are Praechlamys reticulata (Schlotheim, 1823) and Pleuronectites laevigata Schlotheim, 1820 from the Lower Muschelkalk (Middle Triassic, Anisian) of Germany. So-called Praechlamys Allasinaz, 1972 from the Lower Triassic of China, such as Praechlamys wuxingensis (Li, in Nanjing Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources, 1982) reported from the lowermost Griesbachian of south China (Chen, Shi & Kaiho, 2004: 1303), have not been adequately described, and whether or not they have a ctenolium, or even whether they have a pectinoidean-type resilifer, is unknown. Pleuronectites meeki Newell & Boyd, 1995 from the Lower Triassic of Nevada appears to lack a ctenolium, and its small size and auricular configuration suggest that it belongs in the entoliid subfamily Syncyclonematinae rather than in the Pectinidae (Waller, in Waller & Stanley, 2005: 39).
The disparate morphology of early Middle Triassic Praechlamys reticulata and Pleuronectites laevigata, one coarsely ornamented and the other nearly smooth, raises the question of which kind of ornament was present in the earliest pectinid. Clues are provided by the stratigraphic succession of Pleuronectites in the Muschelkalk, which indicates that the oldest forms are more equivalved and more likely to have radial ornament than the later forms (Hagdorn, 1995; Waller, in Waller & Stanley, 2005). The smoothness in Pleuronectites thus appears to be the derived state, and radial ribbing was possibly present in the earliest pectinids, possibly inherited from an ancestor in the family Entolioididae.» WALLER, T. «Praechlamys (type species, Pecten (Chlamys) inaequialternans Parona, 1889), which is the most common chlamydinine in the pre-Rhaetic Triassic of Europe, has costae that increase by intercalation on both valves, lacks prominent antimarginal microsculpture even on its disk flanks, and usually has a peculiar exterior radial depression on the posterior part of the left disk (Allasinaz, 1972). So far as known, an inner layer of aragonite extends nearly to the valve margins on both disk and auricles. This genus is not definitely known from the Scythian stage of the Triassic but is abundantly documented in the Anisian through Carnian interval (Allasinaz, 1972). It is uncommon in the Norian and Rhaetian but occurs in the Early Jurassic (e.g., Pecten lacunarius Rothpletz, 1886, P. palosus Stoliczka, 1861, P. subreticulata Stoliczka, 1861) and may extend as far as the Tithonian (e.g., P. rogoznicensis Zittel, 1870).»
