Coral Sea. CORAIL 2: sta. DW79, 19°12' S, 158°43' E, 58 m, 1 pv, 1 rv. — Sta. DW93, 19°06' S, 158°53' E, 58-60 m, 1 pv (paratype). — Sta. DW159, 19°46' S, 158°20' E, 52 m, 1 pv (paratype). Queensland. Finger Reef, Swain Reefs, 20 m, 1 pv (KL) (Figs 2 A-B). DISTRIBUTION. — West coast of New Caledonia to outer Great Barrier Reef. Attached to corals in depths between 9 and 60 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell to 45.5 mm in height, ovate, solid, inequivalve, rv the deeper, auricles moderately large. Lv flattish, some specimens slightly convex umbonally, outer margin depressed to meet strongly raised margin of rv; sculpture consists of numerous, low, rounded, principal radial ribs stronger marginally, which lock into corresponding interstices in rv; interstices with 2-5 radial riblets and dense striae; principal ribs are ornamented with irregular lorV nodules or spines; internal excavation under the hinge plate only, shallow; margin evenly crenulate, stronger at rib terminations; external ribs obscurely visible internally. Rv convex, cup-shaped, much deeper than lv, outer rim rises steeply to meet corresponding margin of lv; sculpture similar to lv; internal excavation under hinge plate moderately shallow, external ribs obscurely visible internally; margin strongly crenulated. Colour variable, red, orange, pink or yellow, ribs white, spines white or yellow, nodules deep red-brown orange; internally glossy white with some external colour visible, margin red or orange.
Measurements of holotype: Height 37.9 mm, width 38.2 mm, depth of pv 17.7 mm. REMARKS. — While the principal ribs are usually ornamented with irregular low nodules or low, upright spines, one paratype has three longer, remote spines while another has one. Specimens examined from moderately shallow depths (10-20 m) have sharp spines on the lower valve and stronger nodulose spines with some sharper spines marginally on the upper valve. Spondylus maestratii can be compared with S. deforgesi sp. nov., which is similar in size and colour, S. rippingalei sp. nov., which is also ovate in shape and with a flattish lv, S. candidus Lamarck, 1819 which often exhibits an ovate shell, while S. depressus Fulton, 1915 is also similar in having a flattish top valve. For comparisons between S. maestratii and the above mentioned species, see Table 1.
ETIMOLOGY. — Named for Philippe MAESTRATI (MNHN) who, in association with Mireille MOREAU, carried out the preliminary sorting of all bivalve material from the New Caledonian expeditions over the last ten years.»
