«Shell moderately large with a very short hinge line, ground color orange, rendered rather chalky by the lamellar roofing. The type is a left valve, of which the wings are of about equal size on both sides. Both have the lateral margins straight. The posterior auricle is marked by five feeble low rounded radiating threads, while the anterior appears to be free of radiating threads. In addition to this, both wings are marked by very closely spaced lamellae which fuse to encrust the surface of the shell. The central portion of the disk is marked by 36 low, rounded radiating ridges, which are about four times as wide as the spaces that separate them. These ridges in turn are marked by lesser cords. These strong ridges become somewhat enfeebled toward the lateral margin. In addition to this, the entire shell is crossed by concentric lamellae which bend ventrally where they fuse with the adjacent lamellae and thus roof over the entire surface of the shell. Where this covering is broken one can see the hollow slender canal-like spaces between the minute lamellae. The interior shows the color marking of the outside. The hinge shows a tooth in the anterior dorsal corner and another one in the posterior median portion and two slender oblique folds that bound the broad resilial pit passing obliquely across the hinge line. The entire hinge is finely vertically striated. The interior of the shell shows the external markings in reverse order and with the ventral edge scalloped.
The type, U.S.N.M. Cat. No. 173227, was dredged by the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries Steamer Albatross at Station 4132 near Kauai in 257-312 fathoms on fine gray sand and mud bottom; bottom temperature 46.8º F. It measures: height, 48.6 mm.; length, 43.3 mm.; diameter of single valve, 6.5 mm. Fragments of an additional valve, U.S.N.M. cat. No. 335672, were obtained at the same station.» WILLIAM HEALEY DALL, PAUL BARTSCH & HARALD ALFRED REHDER, 1938
