«SPONDYLUS VICTORIAE (fig. 8). S. testa subregulari, depressa, ovali, alba, ad umbones roseo variegata, costis quatuor magnis, paululum elevatis, intermediis alternatis angustioribus; spinis majoribus elongatis, arcuatis, ad terminos palmatis, depressis, ad latera undulatim fimbriatis; spinis minoribus aculeatis, arcuatis, spinis valvae inferioris elongatis, arcuatis, concavis.
Hab. Gulf of California.
This beautiful Spondylus resembles S. imperialis in some respects, but the large spines are depressed and fringed at the sides almost like those of S. cumingii.» GEORGE BRETTINGHAM SOWERBY II

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — The type material.
New Caledonia. EXPÉDITION MONTROUZIER: sta. 1299, Secteur de Koumac, entre la terre et l'Infernet, 20°34.4' S, 164°13.0' E, 12-14 m, 1 pv (Fig. 13 A-B). DISTRIBUTION. — Indo-West Pacific: the Philippines to New Caledonia, northern New South Wales, Queensland to northern Western Australia. Attached to shell debris or free, trawled to 116 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell height to 110 mm; equivalve, gibbous, ovate. Sculpture of 6 principal ribs which are ornamented with strong, spaced, depressed spines, sometimes spatulate; interstices smooth with 5-7 minor ribs ornamented with smaller, sharper spines. Colour white with pink or orange centrally, and brighter pink or orange umbonally, internally white with a strongly crenulated margin.
REMARKS. — The only specimen collected during the ORSTOM/MNHN expeditions differs from the regular form in having fewer interstitial ribs and spines.»
