1845 Spondylus lamarcki Chenu, 1845
«S. Testâ fusco-violaeeseente, radiatìm costatâ; costis 11-12 albis, squamiferis: squamis imbricatis.
Var.

Material in MHNG: Lamarck collection: Probable holotype MHNG 1089/2 (figured herein, Plate 19 Figs 85–87), figured by CHENU on pl. 9 fig. 3–3 a; locality on the label: “Chine”. MHNG 1089/7, not figured by CHENU (variety b).
Remarks: In the account of S. ducalis it was stated that CHENU also figured the species on pl. 9 fig. 3–3 a. The specimen corresponding to pl. 9 fig. 3 of CHENU is in the Lamarck collection of the MHNG, under the name Spondylus lamarckii Chenu, and labelled as a type of the latter species (see also CHENU 1845: 6, text description as S. lamarckii, although the plate caption mentions S. ducalis). The specimen is registered as MHNG 1089/2. CHENU figured another specimen (“variety b”) on pl. 9 fig. 4–4 a, which could not be traced among the material in MHNG. In the Lamarck collection is another specimen (MHNG 1089/7) which has some strong affinities with the shell figured by CHENU on pl. 9 fig. 4–4 a, but showing also some features that allow us to say that it is not the very same specimen as the one figured. This specimen is labelled as “variety b of ducalis (= S. lamarckii CHENU, = latreillei CHENU)”.»
Current taxonomic position: synonym of Spondylus ducalis Lamarck 1819.
