«Material examined: Red Sea: ‘Meteor 31’, stn 93.6, 4 v (SMF).
Gulf of Aden: ‘Meteor 31’, stn 105.4, 21 v (SMF), 7 v (RMNH); Stn 105.5, 287 v (SMF), 49 v (RMNH);‘Meteor 5’, stn 268, 1 v (SMF). Type material: Holotype (lv) SMF 341774, 99 paratypes (v): RMNH 329827 (46v), SMF341775-34177, 341778/50. The additional valves of the type and other stations are not belonging to the type series. Type locality: ‘Meteor 31’, stn 105.5, Gulf of Aden, 12°17.1'N, 44°38.8'E, 761 m, mud, 04.III.1995. Description: Shell small, up to 5.9 mm high, almost circular, slightly higher than wide, exterior and interior glossy, inequivalve, equilateral, auricles unequal in form and sculpture, umbonal angle 95°, colour creamy or whitish transparent or opaque. Left valve very weakly sculptured with numerous, irregularly spaced, antimarginal lirae, commencing near umbo and increasing to ventral margin. Anterior auricle with numerous close-set, delicate commarginal lirae, more prominent and scaly and widely spaced to anterior margin. Posterior auricle with minute, close-set antimarginal lirae developed only near the posterior margin. Right valve sculptured with delicate, closely spaced commarginal lirae. Anterior auricle with 1–3 very fine and scaly radial ridges near disc flank and minute, close-set commarginal lamellae, slightly more prominent near anterior margin. Posterior auricle smooth or with very weak antimarginal scaly riblets. Antero- and posterodorsal margins with fine scales, more prominent on posterior auricle. Hinge line straight. Byssal notch moderately deep, byssal fasciole very small or nearly absent. No ctenolium. Auricular crura well-developed and rather broad. Resilifer triangularly oblique.
Dimensions holotype (lv): H 5.1 mm, W 5.4 mm; figured paratype (rv): H 5.2 mm, W 5.4 mm. Distribution: Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Remarks: A closely related species is Cyclopecten simplex VERRILL 1897, recorded from the Caribbean Sea (699 m) (JOHNSON 1989: 64), which differs from the present species in having an almost smooth surface on the left valve. Only very weak antimarginal lirae are developed near the ventral margin. Cyclopecten ambiannulatus SCHEIN 1989, recorded from the Gulf of Biscay and western Scotland (1913–4829 m) mainly differs in having delicate commarginal sculpture on the left valve, whereas C. meteorae has antimarginal sculpture. Cyclopecten kapalae DIJKSTRA 1990, recorded from off New South Wales and the Kermadec Islands (512–914 m) (DIJKSTRA & MARSHALL 1997: 87) differs from the present species in having reticulate sculpture of prominent, widely spaced, commarginal lirae and weak, close-set, intercalated antimarginal lirae. The sculpture of the right valve of C. kapalae is also more prominent than that of C. meteorae. Etymology: Named after the German oceanographic research vessel “Meteor”, which carried out German cruises to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.» HENK H. DIJKSTRA & ARIE W. JANSSEN, 2013
