Description:
Medium sized shell, exceptionally up to 35 mm high, but usually smaller. Rather thick-shelled, slightly inequilateral, nearly equivalve and height a little exceeding length. Disc rather tumid, left valve more so than right. Ornament extremely variable, even between valves of a single individual. In some cases about ten broad radial ribs are present, all consisting of two secondary ones. Near anterior and posterior margins, the difference between primary and secondary ribs lessens. Also specimens occur with only two or three very broad primary ribs. Some shells have only the fine secondary ribs while others are devoid of any ornament in the centre of the disc, except for concentric growth lines. The micro-ornament, which is radial in the middle of the disc and antimarginal at the anterior and posterior margins, is highly characteristic of this genus. Auricles clearly unequal, posterior one much smaller than anterior one. They have a radial macro-ornament, consisting offive broad scaled ribs; the ornament is weaker on the posterior part of the anterior auricle. An active ctenolium is present, consisting of four or five teeth. Byssal notch rather shallow. Hinge Iine straight, resilium triangular. Interior smooth with a crenate margin. Very rarely a colour pattern is present in fossil specimens. Recent shells are reddish brown with irregular white spots on the left valve and often with inverted V-shaped spots on the right valve. Discussion: Oorderen Sand Member specimens are flatter and up to twice the size ofthose from the Kattendijk Formation; furthermore, they characteristically possess more radial ribs, while in the Kattendijk Formation specimens with few ribs are more common. However, individuals without gross radial ornament are found in both units. JANSSEN & DIJKSTRA (1996) also remarked on similar differences between Recent specimens from the North Sea basin and the Irish Sea. The colour of fossil specimens from Kallo is always plain yellowish brown, and no colour pattern has ever been recorded. The species slightly resembles the coeval Peudamussium clavatum (POLI, 1795), but is easily distinguished by the tumidity of both valves and by the micro-ornament. Occurrence: Palliolum tigerinum (MÜLLER, 1776) is common in the entire Kattendijk Formation. The species is rather rare in the Oorderen Sand Member, most common in the basal crag. It is found in the North Sea basin from the Early Miocene (Berchem Formation, Edegem Sand Member in Belgium, and Vierlandian stage in Germany) to the present day. I know of no Pleistocene records from the Belgian coast. It is also remarkable that this species is common in the Edegem Sand, but disappears in the younger Miocene of Belgium, reappearing in the Early Pliocene (JANSSEN & DIJKSTRA, 1996). In The Netherlands it occurs in beach as well as borehole material from the Miocene onward. WOOD (1856) recorded P. tigerinum in the Coralline and Red Crags of England. Today, P. tigerinum range from orway and Iceland to Morocco, but is absent in the Mediterranean. In the Boreal region it lives from the tidal zone to a depth of 400 m; in the south it has been found even deeper (POPPE & GOTO, 1993). The species is characteristic of colder phases of the Pleistocene in the Mediterranean (LAURIAT-RAGE, 1981). MARQUET, R., P. MOERDIJK & F. A. D. VAN NIEULANDE. 2002. Geographic distribution. — Boreal to tropical eastern Atlantic (c. 70°N - c. 15°N). Living on muddy or muddy sand bottoms with gravel and/or rocks at sublittoral depths
(boreal region) to bathyal depths (subtropical to tropical region). Stratigraphical distribution. — Palliolum tigerinum occurs abundantly in the late Early Miocene (Hemmoorian, Behrendorfian) Edegem Sand Member of the Berchem Formation in Belgium. In younger Miocene deposits it is largely replaced by Pseudamussium lilli (Pusch, 1837), but in the Pliocene deposits of the North Sea Basin it is again more common. Remarks. — Examined Recent material in various Dutch collections from Norway and the northern North Sea is rather strongly sculptured and sometimes bulbous. Material from the Irish Sea is nearly smooth and somewhat larger in size. The wide variation described from Recent material can likewise be observed in the fossil record (e.g. Glibert, 1945). This polymorphy affects exclusively the external macrosculpture, shell form and antimarginal sculpture hardly show any variation at all (Glibert, 1945: 80). JANSSEN, A. W. & H. H. DIJKSTRA. 1996. «DISCUSSION.

ROGER, J. 1939.
