«1915 — Pecten medius: Oliver (non Lamarck, 1819). Trans. N.Z. Inst. 47, p. 553.
Shell very close to the New Zealand Castlecliffian tainui but smaller, more convex (right valve) and with a higher, more swollen beak. The radial ribs are broad with deeply channelled narrow interspaces but their edges are sIightly rounded no sharp as in tainui. These ribs number 17-18 in raoulensis but only 14-15 in tainui. Those towards the anterior and posterior ends are bisected by a deeply incised groove and obsolescent multiple grooving is faintly indicated on most of the ribs.
The intercostal spaces are densely concentrically lamellate. The left valve is distinctly concave with rather narrowly rounded radial ribs and the whole surface is crowded with dense concentric lamellae. The right valve is whit tessellated with pinkish-brown at th beak. The left valve is dull pink with brownish maculations and white chevrons towards the umbo. The interior is white diffused with faint pinkish-brown at the margins. Length, 83 mm.; height, 76 mm.; inflation 29 mm. (Holotype).
Locality: Galathea St. 674 29° 15' S.; 177° 57' W., off Raoul Island, Kermadecs, 75-85 metres, 3:3:1952.» ARTHUR WILLIAM BADEN POWELL, 1958

Raoul and Curtis islands, Kermadec Islands, 42–146 m; taken alive at 110–146 m (Fig. 38). Remarks
Dijkstra and Marshall (1997: 95) reported differences between specimens from depths greater than 50 m and those from shallower depths, and indicated that P. raoulensis is more similar to the Australian P. fumatus than to P. novaezelandiae, differing primarily from P. novaezelandiae in that the left valve extends further beyond the right valve and more strongly overhangs it, as in many specimens of P. fumatus. As indicated by Dijkstra and Marshall (1997), Kermadec specimens from depths greater than 50 m, including the holotype, have sculpture that falls within the limits of variation exhibited by both P. novaezelandiae and P. fumatus, whereas specimens from shallower depths more closely resemble P. fumatus, especially specimens from Queensland.» DIJKSTRA, H. «Dijkstra & Marshall (1997, p. 95, pl. 13) demonstrated that the restricted Kermadec Islands Recent species Pecten raoulensis Powell, 1958 is distinct from both the New Zealand species P. novaezelandiae and the Australian species P. fumatus, although more nearly similar to P. fumatus. Dispersal of Pecten larvae between Australia, New Zealand, and the Kermadec Islands seems to have been minor after the genus arrived and differentiated in the region.»

«Remarks: Pecten raoulensis is similar to the New Zealand species P. novaezelandiae Reeve, 1852, and the Australian species P. fumatus Reeve, 1852, both of which are variable in sculpture, auricle size, valve convexity, colour and colour pattern. Specimens from depths greater than 50 m. including the holotype, have sculpture that falls within the range exhibited by both Recent P. novaezelandiae and P. fumatus. Specimens from shallower depths differ from Recent P. novaezelandiae in the greater strength and earlier appearance of the concentric lamellae, and in the greater strength of the radial sculpture in shells less than 20 mm in length. The latter specimens thus more closely resemble P. fumatus than P. novaezelandiae, especially specimens from Queensland. Both Kennadec forms, which are evidently conspecific, differ further from P. novaezelandiae in that the left valve extends further beyond the right valve and more strongly overhangs it, as in many specimens of P. fumatus. We conclude, therefore, that P. raoulensis is more closely related to P. fumatus than to P. novaezelandiae, which is contrary to the opinion of Fleming (1962), who considered it a geographic subspecies of P. novaezelandiae.»
