«43. Peigne austral. Pecten asperrimus.
P. testa suborbiculari, rubra vel aurantio rubente; radiis 25 subcarinatis, lateribus longitudinaliter sulcatis, imbricato-squamosis; margine crenato. [b] Var. testa minore, pallide fulva; radiorum lateribus uni-sulcatis. Mus. nº.» JEAN BAPTISTE LAMARCK, 1819

«Type material. Lectotype of Pecten asperrimus Lamarck, 1819, designated by Dijkstra (1995: 488), MNHN (Dijkstra 1995: pl. 24, figs 101-104), from ‘les mers australes, a la Nouvelle Hollande, les cotes de Diemen, Peron et Le Sueur’, indicating that it was collected in Australia (including Tasmania) by Peron and Lesueur during the voyage of the ‘Geographe’ and the ‘Naturaliste'; with 4 paralectotypes in MNHN and 7 in MHNG. Donovan’s (1824 [in 1823-1834]: vol. 3, conchology pl. 91) illustration of Ostrea matonii is a beautiful, delicate, accurate watercolor of Mimachlamys asperrima; the repository of any original material from this work is not known. Donovan (1824) gave the locality as ‘Van Diemen’s Land’, ie., Tasmania. The lectotype of Pecten asperrimus Lamarck, 1819 is here designated the neotype of Ostrea matonii Donovan, 1824. Pecten australis G .B. Sowerby II, 1842, 3 ‘probable’ syntypes in BMNH (H. H. Dijkstra, August 1998, pers. comm.), not seen. Lectotype of Pecten antiaustralis Tate, 1886, designated here, Tate’s (1886: pl. 9, fig. 7a-c) figured syntype, SAM T.928A, from ‘oyster beds, Aldinga Bay’, ie., Hallett Cove Sandstone, Late Pliocene, near Adelaide. Holotype of Chlamys asperrimus dennanti Gatliff & Singleton, 1930, NMV P I 3503, from Werrikoo Limestone, above Limestone Creek, Glenelg River, western Victoria, ex J. Dennant coll.; paratype, NMV P I 3504, all data as holotype. We have not seen the type material of the other nominal taxa listed in the synonymy.»

«REMARKS:
Although Rosalie mentioned four specimens, five complete plus one left valve and one right valve are in the Lamarck collection. It is possible that specimens of Lamarck and Delessert were mixed up in the past, but there is no sufficient evidence to recognize the specimens, as Mermod indicated in his cardfile. The largest specimen in the MNHN, covered with a sponge (Hymedesmia sp., det. van Soest, ZMA), is here selected as lectotype. CURRENT TAXONOMIC POSITION AND DISTRIBUTION: P. asperrimus is the type species of Mimachlamys Iredale, 1929. Mimachlamys Iredale is now treated as an extinct genus. The relationship between this taxon and M. australis (Sowerby II, 1842) and M. scabricostata (Sowerby III, 1915) will be discussed elsewhere. The distribution of M. asperrima is from Victoria to Western Australia. Living specimens are observed attached to rocks and covered by sponges in littoral depths.» DIJKSTRA, H. H. 1994.
