«4. Mesopeplum syagrus (Marwick, 1924): Marwick's (1924c, p.326) holotype is a very poor specimen from Mount Brown Limestone (Altonian?; late Early Miocene) in North Canterbury. Although few other Mocene specimens resembling the strongly plicate, very weakly costate, prominently ledged holotype have been seen, specimens closely resembling the type are common in Pliocene collections from eastern North Island. In particular, collections from several localities in limestone (Waipipian) and sandstone (Opoitian) on Mahia Peninsula consist of common M. waikohuense and somewhat less common M. syagrus, with no intergradation whatever; they appear to be distinct species. No specimens resembling M. syagrus have been seen that are younger ttran Waipipian, although it appears to be a good contender to have been the ancestor of M. convexum.»
