«SPONDYLUS RUBICUNDUS. Spond. testâ oblongo-ovatâ, radiatim tenuiliratâ, liris subrudibus, acutè spinosis, spinis valdè irregularibus, breviusculis, curvatis; vividè coccineo-rubrâ.
THE ROUGED SPONDYLUS. Shell oblong-ovate, radiately finely ridged, ridges somewhat rude, sharply spined, spines very irregular, rather short, curved; bright crimson red.
Hab. Philippine Islands. Characterized by an oblong-ovate form, crowded with rather small rude ridges, sparsely furnished with short irregular curved spines.»

«TYPE MATERIAL. — Lectotype (pv), to stabilize without ambiguity the extension of the name rubicundus, we here designate as lectotype the specimen illustrated by Reeve, BMNH 1996035/1; 1 paralectotype (pv), BMNH 1996035/2.
TYPE LOCALITY. — The Philippines.
MATERIAL EXAMINED. — The type material.
New Caledonia. LAGON: sta. 145, Ile Ouen-Baie du Prony, 22°21' S, 166°50' E, 15-30 m, 1 pv (Figs 11 E-F). DISTRIBUTION. — West Pacific: the Philippines, New Caledonia. Attached to oyster or other shell debris to 15 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell height to 80 mm; elongate-ovate. Sculpture of numerous, irregular, fine ribs with numerous sharp or flattened spines; interstices with fine radial ridges usually with small, fine, sharp appressed spines. Colour brown, mauve or coral red with some white umbonally, often with scarlet markings; internally white with red or orange and yellow variegated, crenulated margin.
REMARKS. — The specimen examined was attached to a species of Isognomon, as are many examples from the Philippines.»
