«Description. — Shell up to 40 mm high, most specimens to c. 25 mm; subcircular, left valve flattened, right valve more inflated, slightly inequivalve and equilateral, auricles somewhat unequal in shape and size, umbonal angle about 85-90˚; internal lirae with rib carinae in most specimens (lacking in a few); hinge teeth weak; colour highly variable, white, cream, yellow, red, purple, brownish, uniform or mottled. Both valves sculptured with 7-9 evenly spaced radial costae, with widely spaced curved scales (larger on left valve than on right), more prominent marginally. Costae and interstices equally wide. Auricles with very closely spaced commarginal microsculpture (almost lacking on disc), macrosculpture lacking except for 2-3 radial riblets on anterior auricle of right valve; dorsal margin spinose. Byssal notch moderately deep, byssal fasciole rather broad. Functional ctenolium with 5-8 prominent teeth.
Distribution. — Tropical Indo-West and central Pacific from southern Japan southwards to northern Australia, eastwards to the Line Islands (not recorded from the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia) (ZMA, unpublished data; Raines & Poppe, 2006: 132). Present specimens from the Philippines alive at 27-120 m (minimum depth range). Living amongst coral rubble on sandy bottoms. Remarks. — The present specimens from the Philippines are indistinguishable from the type specimen. For comparison with congeneric species see Dijkstra & Kilburn (2001: 285).» DIJKSTRA, H. H. 2013. «Mirapecten boutetorum spec. nov. differs from M. rastellum (Lamarck, 1819), a well-known Indo-West Pacific species (Raines & Poppe, 2006: 132, pl. 81 figs 1-6, pl. 82 figs 1-6), by having strongly developed and closely arranged scales on the plicae of both valves (almost lacking or weakly developed and more widely spaced on the left valve, and delicate spines on the right valve of M. rastellum), by having more weakly developed commarginal microsculpture (more prominent in M. rastellum), and by lacking secondary radial sculpture in the late growth stage near the ventral margin (present in M. rastellum).»

«Mirapecten rastellum (Lamarck, 1819) differs from M. tuberosus in its more regularly spaced radial plicae; M. tuberosus has more numerous, irregularly spaced primary and secondary radial plicae and lirae. Also, M. rastellum lacks vesicles on the plicae as found in M. tuberosus.
Mirapecten moluccensis Dijkstra, 1988, differs from M. tuberosus in its more regularly spaced, radial plicae, which are slightly undulated or bear small tubercles. M. moluccensis has antimarginal striae near the ventral margin, which are absent in M. tuberosus. The colour pattern of M. moluccensis mainly differs from that of M. tuberosus in the presence of milky white, black or brown dots on the radial plicae; M. tuberosus is more uniform in colour. Mirapecten yaroni Dijkstra & Knudsen, 1998, of the Red Sea is morphologically closest to M. rastellum and differs further from M. tuberosus in its larger size (attaining 70 mm, compared with only about 35 mm in M. tuberosus), and in its regularly spaced radial plicae which on the LV bear strongly produced lamellar scales. M. cranmerorum (Waller, 1986) similarly differs from M. tuberosus in its larger size (attaining 70 mm high), its strongly developed and broader radial plicae, without secondary intercostal radial lirae such as occur in M. tuberosus, and in commonly possessing fine antimarginal striae near the ventral margin, which are lacking in M. tuberosus. M. cranmerorum may have a few, very weak scales on the radial plicae, but these are usually absent; M. tuberosus has strongly produced scales and vesicles on the radial plicae and intermediate lirae. Remarks: Although Oliver (1992) figured this species as Mirapecten rastellum, it resembles neither the type specimen of Pecten rastellum Lamarck, 1819, nor the accompanying specimen of P. rastellum ‘var. b’ of Lamarck, 1819 (see Dijkstra 1994: 474, pl. 6, figs 17–21, pl. 7, figs 22–26), as suggested by him.» DIJKSTRA, H. Type locality: "Les mers du nord". Lamarck's indication of locality is very confusing, as it could be either the northern Atlantic Ocean or the northern Pacific Ocean. This species does not exist in either region. Therefore a new type locality is here designated: Off Punta Engano, Mactan, Cebu, Philippines (ZMA coll.). Type material: Specimen cited : "Mon. cab." REMARKS : In Lamarck's collection, there was one complete specimen, matching Lamarck's measurement cited in the text, and one complete specimen of var. [b], in agreement with Rosalie's marginal annotations. Although MERMOD treated P. ratellum [sic] var. "beta" as a type in his manuscript cardfile (MHNG), I.C.Z.N. (1985) article 72 (b)(i) clearly states that varieties mentioned by a letter should be excluded from the type series. In addition, the specimens and the original labels of Lamarck were reversed before Mermod's registration, so that the holotype, which is the white specimen 34.5 mm wide (MHNG 1088/24) was erroneously labelled and filed as the "var. [b]" in the Lamarck collection, while the smaller red specimen representing the true variety [b] (MHNG 1088/23), which is similar to Pecten mirificus Reeve, 1853, was erroneously labelled as the type of the nominal species. The MHNG registration numbers mentioned here are written on the inner side of the specimens. CURRENT TAXONOMIC POSITION AND DISTRIBUTION: DAUTZENBERG & BAVAY (1912: 9) synonymized P. rastellum with Ostrea squamata Gmelin, 1791, which is similar to Ostrea imbricata Gmelin, 1791 (DIJKSTRA, 1991: 48), and does not have the conchological features of P. rastellum. Pecten amaliae Kobelt, 1887 is a junior synonym of P. rastellum. Comptopallium spiceri described by REHDER (1944: 52) from the Line Islands is also very similar to P. rastellum, and could be a geographic variant. Material observed from the Red Sea (ZMA, ZMK) belongs to a new subspecies of P. rastellum (DIJKSTRA & KNUDSEN, in prep.). The recent species is presently placed in Mirapecten Dall, Bartsch & Rehder, 1938, a genus in the tribe Decatopectinini Waller, 1986. P. rastellum ranges throughout the western, southwestern and central Pacific. Live specimens are found on sandy bottoms, usually attached by byssal threads to corals or coral rubble in littoral to sublittoral depths.» DIJKSTRA, H. H. 1994.
