«Cingentolium nov. gen.
Typusart: Pecten cingulatus GOLDFUSS (non PHILLIPS) in Petrefacta Germaniae (1835, 74, Taf. 99, Fig. 3a, b)

«The Jurassic genus Cingentolium Yamani, 1983, of which Neoentolium Romanov, 1985 is an objective junior synonym, is of questionable status. Yamani confused left and right valves because he followed the obsolete notion that the more deeply scrolled auricles occur on the left valve. The principal means of distinguishing the genus from Entolium is the presence of what Yamani (1983) and Romanov (1985) interpreted as unusually sharp disk buttresses. However, in Yamani’s material these inner disk ridges mark a dissolution boundary between an inner aragonitic layer and an outer calcitic layer, as already indicated by Johnson’s (1984: 35) statement that the ridges ‘result from diagenetic processes’. Colpentolium Yamani, 1983 introduced as a subgenus of Cingentolium, was said by Yamani to differ from Cingentolium s.s. by the presence of a byssal notch. Examination of his material in BSPHG, however, revealed that the byssal notch is an artefact of preparation, and that Colpentolium has nothing to distinguish it from Cingentolium.»
