DALL, W. H., P. BARTSCH & H. A. REHDER. 1938. A manual of the Recent and fossil marine pelecypod mollusks of the Hawaiian Islands. Bernice P. Bishop Museum Bulletin, 153: i-iv, 1-233, pls. 1-58. [p. 84, pl. 21, figs. 7-8]
«Mirapecten thaanumi, new species (pl. 2I, figs. 7-8).
Shell small, bright red variegated with white blotches. The early prodissoconch stage semi-circular, apparently smooth; the succeeding stage also smooth. Upper valve strongly winged. The right wing has two ridges which bear hollow spines; the left wing has three ridges which are considerably less strong than those of the right. The upper two are also spinose, but less so than the right. The main portion of the shell is marked by five strong radiating ridges which bear a few (three to five) hollow spines. The spaces that separate these ridges are considerably wider than the ridges. The entire surface of the shell is marked by fine slender feeble lamellae which are almost threadlike, but which slope ventrally, and microscopic radiating striations. The interior of the shell is colored like the exterior, and equally irregular in contour. The ligamental area is very narrow, the resilial pit stronger and the hinge line marked by fine transverse denticulations. The type, U.S.N.M. Cat. No. 173195, was collected by the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries Steamer Albatross at Station 3819 off the south coast of Molokai in 70-99 fathoms on coral sand, coral and rock bottom; bottom temperature 73º. It measures: height, 14.8 mm.; length, 15.5 mm.; diameter, 2.2 mm. Another specimen, U.S.N.M. Cat. No. 337548, was collected by Thaanum (Coll. No. 8313) off Waikiki, Oahu. This is a little smaller than the type.» WILLIAM HEALEY DALL, PAUL BARTSCH & HARALD ALFRED REHDER, 1838 |
