«SPONDYLUS BUTLERI. Spond. testâ trigono-ovatâ, radiatim striatâ et liratâ, liris versus marginem obsoletis, prope umbonem obscurè squamato-muricatis, deinde spinosis, spinis subamplis, latis, paucis, promiscuè contortis; purpureo-nigricante, circa umbonem nebulatâ, spinis vividè aurantiis.
BUTLER'S SPONDYLUS. Shell triangularly ovate, radiately striated and ridged, ridges obsolete towards the margin, obscurely squamately prickled near the umbo, then spined, spines rather large, broad, few, promiscuously twisted ; purple-blackish, clouded around the umbo, spines bright orange.
Hab. Philippine Islands; Cuming. Uniformly distinguished from S. aurantius by its more regular Pecten-shape growth and blackish ground-colouring, and by the broad straggling character of the spines, which are much fewer in number and more distant.»

MATERIAL EXAMINED. -- The type material.
New Caledonia. Nouméa, Baie de Sainte Marie, 14 m, Bouchet coll., 1 pv. LAGON: sta. 707, Secteur de Canala, 21 °25' S, 166°04' E, 34-38 m, 1 pv (Figs 11 C-D). — Sta. 882, Secteur de Poindimié, 20°29' S, 164°45' E, 30-40 m, 1 lv. EXPÉDITION MONTROUZIER, sta. 1289, Paagoumène, 20°29.2' S, 164°10.2' E, intertidal 1 pv. DISTRIBUTION. — Indo-West Pacific: Madagascar, the Philippines, Micronesia, Queensland, New Caledonia. Attached to corals, in New Caledonia from intertidal to 34 m.
DESCRIPTION (from specimens in Lamprell Collection). — Shell height to 75 mm; ovate, moderately convex, Iv usually more inflated than the rv; cardinal area moderately short. Sculpture of numerous, fine, radial ribs which bear strong, depressed, sharp or slightly spatulate spines; interstices smooth, without sculpture. Colour variable, interstices dark brown, spines yellow, orange, red or brown; internally blue-white, inner crenulated margin dark-brown, outer margin purple-brown, hinge and margins near umbo light brown.
REMARKS. — Spondylus butleri is usually found in protected habitats almost fully attached by the rv.»
