«DISTRIBUTION. — West Pacific: the Philippines, Queen land to Northern Territory, New Caledonia. Attached to rock or corals to 22 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell height to 70 mm; similar to S. nicobaricus, differing in that the ribs are more pronounced and bear short, strong, elevated spines while the interstices are striated with some short spines. Colour white with dark radiating lines hich in adult shells, become dense at the margin, umbonal area white with purple-black spotting; internally white with black-brown at the crenulated margin and brown at the hinge.
REMARKS. — Spondylus ocellatus is a commonly collected, inner reef species, differing from S. nicobaricus principally in possessing stronger radial ribs, stronger spines and dark radial lines in the interstices. These consistent differences support recognition of S. ocellatus as a valid species rather than a form of S. nicobaricus.»
