«20. Spondyle zonal. Spondylus zonalis.
Sp. testâ, inaequivalvi, radiatim sulcatâ et spinosâ; umbone albo, maculis fuscis picto; zonâ limbosâ, latâ, spadiceâ , lutescente.
Habite l'Océan des grandes Indes. Mon cabinet. Quoiqu'il ait des rapports avec le précédent, il est très-inéquivalve, plus grand, très-renflé et bossu en dessous, avec des lames foliacées et des écailles.»

Remarks: In the original volumes of Anim. Sans Vert. there is an annotation by Rosalie de LAMARCK stating that there was only 1 specimen in her father’s collection.

«TYPE MATERIAL. — Not researched.
TYPE LOCALITY. — S. zonalis: "Ocean des Grandes Indes". d' Amerique". — S. herinaceus: "les mers d' Amerique".
MATERIAL EXAMINED. — New Caledonia. LAGON: sta. 592, Ile des Pins, 22°34' S, 167°22' E, 21-22 m, 1 pv. — Sta. 921, Secteur de Koumac, 20°51' S, 164°27' E, 10-11 m, 1 Iv (Figs 13 B-C).
DISTRIBUTION. — Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea, Mauritius, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, Queensland to Northern Territory, New Caledonia. Attached to shell debris, rock or corals to 22 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell height to 113 mm; ovate to Pecten-shaped, top valve depressed to moderately convex; cardinal area moderately produced. Sculpture of numerous; moderately strong, radial ribs which are ornamented with short, depressed spines, short at umbo, longer marginally, spines often spatulate in gerontic specimens. Colour variable, usually with a large white, black spotted area at the umbo, the rest of the shell with concentric bands of brown or purple, spines white, yellow or purplish; internally white with a brown-purple and white variegated crenulated margin.
REMARKS. — Spondylus zonalis is similar to S. albibarbatus but differs in being more elongate, less gibbous and lacking the strong, white radial ribs of that species.»
