«250. PECTEN fasciculatus, (Plate XVII, fig. 4). Testa late subtrigona, planiuscula, tenui, inaequiauriculata, rufo-violascente albo maculata; valvis consimilibus, costis parvis numerosis, eleganter serratis, in fascibus quinque plerumque aggregatis, alteris interstitiis suppletis; auriculis inaequalibus, rectis, argute serratis, dentatis; intus violascente.
Inhab. West coast of Veragua. In seventeen fathoms, among sandy mud. A beautiful and delicate shell, traversed by numerous small finely serrated ribs, a large portion of which are gathered into five bundles, the others being less aggregated and occupying the interspaces. The auricles differ in size, and are strongly grooved, with intervening sharp ridges. Within, the valves are coarsely ribbed, and of a rich peach colour.» RICHARD BRINSLEY HINDS, 1845

«Shell small or of medium size, slightly inequilateral and equivalve, high and narrow above, the ears small, and the hinge line short, the general surface of each valve flattish but with the basal margin contracted sharply in the adult so that the edges meet each other nearly vertical. Shell texture is rather thin, its surface folded so as to form five or six heavy ribs (more or less similar in each valve) of which the middle three are the largest; in addition, the whole surface is covered with small radial threads or cords; in the left valve, the radial threads are wider than their interspaces, the latter crossed by upward looped concentric threads producing a network of rectangular or hexagonal cells; on the right valve, the secondary riblets are larger, rounder, and are separated merely by pitted grooved lines. The ribs are absent from the turned down marginal zone, the only sculpture there is the cordlike radials. In the interior, because of the thinness of the shell, the ribs and interspaces are shown in the reverse, the edges of the ribs by a thickened cord. Ears small, the anterior one a little longer. Hinge line without crura. Color in the specimens seen is a mauve or dull raspberry red, clouded with blotches of yellow or cream.
Length 29.1 mm., height 31 mm., semidiameter 9 mm. right valve. Length 30.4 mm., height 31.7 mm., semidiameter 1.1 mm. left valve. Gorda Bank, Gulf of California in 60 fathoms. Calif. Acad. Sci. 17769. Range — Gulf of California to Panama. Mexico: Arena Bank, Gulf of California; Gorda Bank, Gulf of California (Hertlein and Strong); Veragua (Hinds); Gulf of Panama (Dall). Depth of 17 to 182 fathoms.» OLSSON, A. A. 1961. Mollusks of the Tropical Eastern Pacific, Particularly from the southern half of the Panamic-Pacific Faunal Province (Panama to Peru). «Additional description: Shell rather small, maximum adult height about 32 mm; slightly higher than long, usually somewhat oblique and inequivalve, right valve exceeding left in convexity. Hinge line Iess than half length of disk. Auricles unequal, anterior being longer; byssal notch shallow and ctenolium of five teeth. Right valve moderately convex and with ventral margin usually flexed; left flatter and flexed less sharply or not at all. Ribs result of corrugations of disk; four in center of disk prominent, rounded and becoming much wider at ventral margin; a narrower and lower rib next to anterior margin and two next to posterior, with disposition occasionally reversed; small radial ridges and minute concentric lamellae covering disk. Anterior auricles with about five imbricated radial ridges; posterior with one to three fairly strong radial ridges adjoining hinge line, below them an excavated area having smaller ridges and very fine concentric striae. Interior of each valve with about 28 radial ridges, smoothly angled in center of disk but sharply angled and more prominent near ventral margin. Exterior of each valve red-violet or purple-brown and with white markings; interior of right valve ranging from purple to peach, left valve violet.
Geographical range: Southern part of Gulf of California to Panama Bay. Geochronological range; Reported only from the Recent. Bathymetric range: Recorded in 17 to 182 fathoms. Ecological data: Found in sand, muddy sand, mud or rock bottoms; associated with algae, coralline and coral.» GRAU, G. 1959. Pectinidae of the eastern Pacific. «This species is not present in the Templeton Crocker Collection. Hinds illustrated only a left valve, and Dall a right valve, of species occurring off Panama. The number of ribs in each, is about the same, and the descriptions seem to indicate that Dall's species will need to be placed in the synonymy of P. fasciculatus Hinds. This species appears to be the only representative of the subgenus Decadopecten, to be reported Recent or fossil from western North America. Recent and fossil forms of Decadopecten are represented in the Asiatic and Mediterranean regions.
Dall in 1898 gave a brief description of a species cited as Pecten panamensis DaII. According to the description the species differs from P. plica Linnaeus, "by having the cardinal laminae obsolete and in the presence of a byssal sinus and ctenolium." No locality is given for the species but the name suggests that it came from or occurs near Panama. Possibly this is the species later described by Dall as P. miser which in the present paper is referred to P. fasciculatus Hinds. HERTLEIN, L. G. 1935.
