KARL ALFRED ZITTEL, 1865

«Type material. The holotype of Pecten aucklandicus is one of the specimens on the small slab illustrated by Zittel (1865, pl. 9, fig. 1) from locality 2, Orakei Bay, Auckland, that has not been seen in NHMW. The location of the type material is unknown, and a neotype is probably required. However, further research on which taxa occur at Orakei Bay is required to be certain of a suitable specimen. A plaster replica of the small NHMW slab in GNS bears a poor, undiagnostic cast of the holotype (TM4255).
Remarks. Maxwell (in Beu & Maxwell 1990, p. 374) very plausibly interpreted Parvamussium aucklandicum as a species occurring in Otaian (early Miocene) rocks at Holland’s Point, Pakaurangi Point, Kaipara Harbour, a short distance north of Auckland. He provided excellent SEM illustrations of P. aucklandicum (Beu & Maxwell 1990, pl. 51a, b, f). These illustrations are repeated here (Fig. 10J, L, M). The specimen is 4.5 mm high, and has a wide disc with c. 20-22 radial costae on the left valve, crossed by numerous low, thin, commarginal ridges that form low, triangular scales where they cross the costae, eight narrow internal radial ridges, and sculpture of many low, even, closely spaced, commarginal lamellae on the right valve. The byssal notch is deep and narrow, forming a much longer right anterior auricle than the posterior one. This species is not uncommon at Hollands Point, Pakaurangi Point, but a neotype needs to be selected from the type locality, Orakei Bay, Auckland.»
