«Description of lectotype of Spondylus croceus Schreibers, 1793. - Length 56.4 mm, width 52.4 mm, depth of paired valves 37.3 mm. Valves unequal, lower valve the deeper, auricles moderately narrow. Sculpture of 5-6 principle ribs, with numerous interstitial ribs of varying strength. Spines on principal ribs broad, raised, moderately long, hollow under. Spines on interstitial ribs obsolete. Hinge typical for genus; inner margin strongly, evenly, narrowly crenulated. Colour externally orange; internally dull white with orange margins. Shell fixed by approximately 1/3 of lower surface.
Type locality: East Indian Ocean (Chemnitz). Discussion. - Spondylus croceus Schreibers is distributed in the Indo-Pacific, from Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines to Australia, central to north Queensland. S. croceus can be best compared with orange coloured specimens of Spondylus foliaceus Schreibers, 1793 (Lamprell & Willan, 2000: 4) but can be separated from that species by its smaller adult size and more numerous interstitial ribs and longer interstitial spining. Compared with Spondylus multimuricatus Reeve (Lamprell. 1986: 32, pl. 9 figs. 2a-b [non Reeve. 1856]) which is similarly in outline, S. croceus can be separated by the longer, broad spines (short irregular and squamate spining in that species) and colour, brick-orange in S. croceus, deep red-orange with purple areas at umbos in S. multimuricatus [sensu Lamprell, 1986; non Reeve, 1856].»
