Dieser Spondylus hat auf dem Rücken viel Streiffen, Zacken, Lappen und spadenförmige Schuppen, einen gekerbten, braunröthlich eingefaßten Rand, auf beyden Seiten des Wirbels Ohren, und eine schmutzigviolete Grundfarbe mit weißen Zacken. Er kommt aus Ostindien.» KARL SCHREIBERS, 1793

Attached to corals; the species appears to be restricted to moderately shallow waters, in New Caledonia alive at depths between 12 and 26 m.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell height to 90 mm; ovate, gibbous, Iv usually more convex than the rv; cardinal area moderately produced. Sculpture of numerous, strong ribs which extend from the umbo to the margins; ornamented with strong, depressed, spatulate or flat spines of variable length interstices smooth, narrow, with few, depressed, sharp spines. Colour of interstices white, dark-brown or brown-red, spines white; internally blue-white with a wide, variegated coloured crenulated margin, hinge brown.
REMARKS. — Spondylus squamosus is easily distinguished from other species of Spondylus occurring in the New Caledonian region because of its coarse, prominent spines.»
