«P. testa magna, suborbiculata, aequilaterali, inaequivalvi, solidula; valva dextra multum convexa, sinistram omnino superimpendente, sinistra ipsa concava; costis radiantibus 17-18 utraque valva praedita, his dextrae valvce plus minus Iaevibus, albocarneis, nitidulis, longitudinaliter leniter bi- vel trisuslculosis, interstitiis sub lente transversim squamo-liratulis, ad latera spiraliter rubro paucistrigata, illis sinistrae valvae, simul ac interstitiis, arctissime concentrice striato-liratis, superficie omni fusco-rubescente, concava, versus umbonem solum Iaevi, nitida, hic illic sparsim praecipue ad umbonem, lineis fidgetrinis nigro-rufis irregulariter ornata, costis quam in dextra angustioribus; auriculis fere aequalibus, latis; pagina interna alba, nitida, versus umbones solum pallide ochracea.
Alt. 50, lat. 57, diam. 20 mm. Hab. P.G. Dabai. Chiefly characterised by the smoothness of the right valve, the ribs being already cut into deep interstices, slightly 2-3-sulcate, while the fellow-valve is concave, dark unicolorous fuscous-red, smooth; and the equally smooth umbo, in the neighbourhood of which are zigzag sharply-drawn lines of dark brown, few in number. The whole of the surface of this valve is clearly concentrically striate-lirate; the auricles are subequal. Allied to P. jacobaeus L., sinensis Sowb., and keppelianus Sowb. I am much indebted to Mr. G. B. Sowerby for having examined this new form, and given his pronouncement thereupon. Named in honour of my youngest daughter, Dorothea Melvill.» JAMES COSMO MELVILL, 1906

«En el Mar Rojo vive una especie muy interesante (P. dorotheae Melvin & Standen) que podría ser un representante directo del último antecesor común de las vieiras ancestrales del Indico, si es que han existido alguna vez, o bien una dispersión hacia el norte de las vieiras surafricanas.»

«Size: Normal adult size range is 70 to 80 mm.
Distribution: From the Persian Gulf to Somalia. Habitat: Littoral zone, on sandy bottoms with coral rubble. Remarks: There seems to be some confusion with the date and authorship on this species. Many publications list it as "Melvill & Standen, 1907"; however, the original description in the Proceedings of The Zoological Society of London, clearly reads "November 13, 1906." As for the authorship, the text also makes it clear that Melvill is the sole author. Relevan t Literature: Melvill & Sta nden, 1906; Kilburn & Dijkstra, 1995.» RAINES, B. K. & G. T. POPPE. 2006. «Pecten dorotheae Melvill in Melvill & Standen, 1907, from the Persian Gulf and off Somalia differs in several features from P. afribenedictus. In dorotheae the radial ribs of the right valve are flat-topped and distinctly bifid, with some secondary radial grooves visible in mature specimens. In P. afribenedictus the radial ribs on the right valve are slightly rounded in t/s, and lack distinct radial grooves. The left valve in P. dorotheae is flatter and the ribs are higher and more tabulate, and their intervals bear an occasional secondary riblet, lacking in afribenedictus. The coloration is somewhat similar in both species, although P. dorotheae tends to be slightly paler.
