«The holotypes of S. sparsispinosus and S. erectospinus are essentially similar, and we agree with Beu and Maxwell (1990) that they may be conspecific.»

«DISTRIBUTION. — West Pacific: South China Sea, New Caledonia. This is a deep-water species, but its precise bathymetric range is unknown.
DESCRIPTION. — Shell to 40 mm in height; oblique, Iv depressed, rv convex. Sculpture of Iv with many radial ridges, ornamented with short, sharp, upright spines, longer posteriorly; rv foliated and with long sharp spines in radial rows. Colour chalk-white to yellow with concentric bands of light brown, usually with some rose colour towards the posterior margin and on the rv; internally white with brown towards the hinge and rose coloured posterior margin.
REMARKS. — The only New Caledonia specimen observed in the present study is a single lv, which corresponds well with the type series.»
