Pecten (burdigalensis) orbiculatus, utrinque convexus it radiatus; lateribus hiantibus. n.» JEAN BAPTISTE LAMARCK, 1809

«Bongrain & Cahuzac (2004) regarded Amussiopecten as a junior synonym of Flabellipecten, thus reverting to the old position of Depéret & Roman (1910). This matter has long been contentious, with some authors maintaining that Amussiopecten, as represented by its type species, Pecten burdigalensis Lamarck, 1806, from the Lower Miocene (Aquitanian and Burdigalian) of Europe, intergrades with Flabellipecten, represented by its type species Ostrea flabelliformis Brocchi, 1814, from the Late Pliocene of Italy, whereas others (e.g., Cox, 1927; Masuda, 1971b; Waller, 1991: 38, 2006a: 25; Harzhauser et al., 2007: 149) have regarded these genera as distinct. In the present study, I continue to regard Amussiopecten as a valid genus applicable to a group of Oligocene to Pliocene pectinids with a circumtropical distribution as described by Masuda (1971b). This distribution was achieved before the end of the Early Miocene. With the closure of the eastern gateways of the proto-Mediterranean in the Burdigalian (Harzhauser et al., 2007), the Mediterranean representatives of Amussiopecten became isolated and failed to diversify, except to achieve large sizes and thick shells, such as in A. burdigalensis and A. expansus (G. B. Sowerby I, 1847), while tropical western Indo-Pacific and American Amussiopecten underwent extensive speciation.»

«The genus Amussiopecten with Pecten burdigalensis LAMARCK, 1806 as the type species by original designation, has a rather complicated taxonomic history (MASUDA, 1971). It was originally defined as a subgenus of Pecten by SACCO, 1897 but shortly thereafter was elevated to full genus rank (UGOLINI, 1907). DEPERET and ROMAN (1912) that greatly influenced European paleomalacology placed Pecten burdigalensis in Flabellipecten SACCO, 1897, where it is still placed by many present-day taxonomists. Knowledge of the taxonomic scope of Amussiopecten, now has greatly expanded. MASUDA (1971), for example, showed that the genus has a worldwide circumequatorial distribution with probably more than 20 species ranging from Oligocene to Pliocene. Clearly a more modern generic definition of the genus is needed.
Original description of Amussiopecten burdigalensis made by LAMARCK (1806) was a short annotation without figure, exact stratum or locality. Stratum (beds with Pecten beudanti) and locality (Saucats = Burdigalian of the Aquitan Basin) were cited firstly by BASTEROT (1825), since the first figure (topotype) was given by SACCO (1897). DEPERET and ROMAN (1912) were the first authors who gave a detailed diagnosis, description and comparative analysis of the types. Despite to their work a high grade of taxonomic uncertainty within the species remained until recent days. For example BAGLIONI MAVROS et al. (1986) understood under their "Flabellipecten burdigalensis" 6 distinct species of Upper Oligocene to Middle Miocene age: burdigalensis LAMARCK, 1806, pasini MENEGHINI, 1857, koheni FUCHS, 1876, vinassai UGOLINI, 1907, ugolini DEPERET et ROMAN, 1912 and pseudopasini VENZO, 1933. An additional species - the Upper Oligocene Pecten (Amussiopecten) burdigalensis Minor ROTH v. TELEGD, 1914 - was included indirectly by citing the Flabellipecten burdigalensis sensu CSEPREGHY-MEZNERICS, 1960.» BALDI, T., G. LESS & O. MANDIC. 1999. «Shell large, flabelliform, subequivalve.
Right valve moderately convex, ornamented with about twelve broad, flattened ribs, which tend to die out towards the ventral margin, separatecl by wide, shallow interspaces. Ears broad, subequal, meeting at a very obtuse angle; the anterior with a shallow notch at its base. Left valve, wiih thirteen or fourteen ribs, angular beneath the umbo but becomirg rounded towards the margin, slightly more prominent than those on the right valve and with wider interspaces. Surface of both valves covered with fine, regular, concentric lines of growth, and with fine raclial striae on both ribs and furrows. Interior of shell provided with paired narrow ribs (each pair corresponding to an external furrow), prominent along the ventral border but clying out towards the middle of the valve. Remarks. This well-known and wirlely-distributed Miocene species is known from the Asmari limestone of S.W. Persia, and is found abundantly in the Lower Miocene of Central Persia, where forms agreeing closely with the topotype of the species figured by Depétret and Roman (op. cit. pl. XXI, fig. I) occur in association with others in which external ribbing is entirely lacking, although if the shell be moistened or otherwise rendered transparent, the internal ribs become clearly visible and simulate the appearance of faint external ribbing.
These smooth forms have usually been regarded as separate species, and have been described under a variety of names: P. expansus Sowerby, P. placenta Fuchs, and P. geneffensis Fuchs. As, however, it is possible to obtain a complete series of transitional forms showing the gradual dying out of the ribs it seems doubtful if more than a varietal distinction is warranted. Should a specific name be retained, that of P. expansus Sowerby must have priority. It must be noted that, concurrently with the disappearance of the externaI ribs, those in the interior of the shell become more pronounced, until in the externally smooth form they extend completely from ventral margin to umbo, thus furnishing a transition to the type of internal ribbing seen in the genus Amussium.» DOUGLAS, J.
