«T. ovali-subtrigonâ, aequivalvi, sub-aequilaterali, sub-compressa: auriculis inaequalibus, scabroso-sulcatis: posticis parvis; anticis magnis, costis 18, prope marginem squamosis, alternis depressis, minoribus, interstitiis Iaeviter striatis: costis valvae dextrae, numerosis, minutè squamosis, inaequalibus: colore sulphureo, costis alternis depressis, rubro maculatis. Long. 0.92.; lat. 0.30.; alt. 1.; poll.
The only specimen of this shell with which we are acquainted is in the collection of the Rev. F. J. Stainforth. The ribs are scaly near the margin, the intermediate ones, which are more depressed, have spots of a deep red colour in the centre of the shell.» GEORGE BRETTINGHAM SOWERBY II, 1842

«Gmelin’s Ostrea sauciata is based on Chemnitz 7 69 H from the Red Sea, in all probability from Forsskål and Niebuhr’s original material. Raines & Goto (2006 p. 398) placed it as synonym of ruschenbergerii. However, the OD of Chemnitz clearly points into P. rubromaculatus of Sowerby II, which is well known from the Red Sea. Laevichlamys sauciata (Gmelin, 1791) is therefore understood as the valid, earlier name for Pecten rubromaculatus. Lamy (1936) came to a similar conclusion.»

«Distribution: Red. Sea, Gulf of Aden, Seychelles, Chagos Islands, southwards to Réunion and Mauritius. Littoral depths, living byssally attached to coral branches or underside of boulders or amongst coral rubble on sandy bottoms.
Remarks: The present species differs from the closely related species Laevichlamys lemniscata (Reeve, 1853), known from the southwestern Indian Ocean to South Africa, by a finer sculpture of radial costae and lamellae, in colouration and in size (L. rubromaculata up to ca. 40 mm; L. lemniscata ca. 60 mm]. For description of the present species see Oliver (1992: 76) [as Chlamys (Scaeochlamys) lemniscata (Reeve, 1853)].» DIJKSTRA, H. H. & J. KNUDSEN. 1998.
