«Testa tenuis, subpllucida, aequivalvis, paulo obliqua; valvae costis tenuibus subdistantibus plicisque concentricis paucis subcancellatae, undique minute radiatim microscopice striatae; costai tenues, interdum pallide lutescentes, margines versus plus minus minute squamatae; auriculae valvae sinistrae inaequales, antica majori; postica valvae dextrae liris sex confertim squamatis instructa, inferne mediocriter profunde sinuata; pagina interna nitens, radiatim haud profunde sulcata, sulcis liris externis congruentibus.
Longit. 18 millim., alt. 19, diam. 4½|. Of this pretty species there is one perfect specimen and a single right valve. The substance of the shell is very thin, semipellucid towards the umbones, and rather more opaque elsewhere. The radiating striae are excessively minute, and a trifle more conspicuous in the right valve than in the left. The valves are decidedly oblique towards the front and smooth at the apices, the costae commencing at a distance of about two millimetres from the extreme tip. Most of the ridges in the left valve have a pale luteous tint upon their lower halves, a feature not present in the other valve of the same specimen, which, however, is peculiar in having a bright reddish streak on the dorsal slopes within. The few concentric plicae which produce the somewhat cancellated aspect of the exterior appear to be periodic marks of growth.» EDGAR ALBERT SMITH, 1891

«Pseudamussium challengeri is similar to the southern African species P. gilchristi (Sowerby, 1904), in gross facies, but differs by having radial microsculpture throughout ontogeny. The macrosculpture of both species is extremely variable: ranging from smooth undulated radial lirae, characteristic of the New Zealand morph of P. challengeri, to a more complicated sculpture of primary radial lirae and secondary intercalated riblets, which are covered with spoonshaped lamellae.
Rombouts (1991) referred P. challengeri to Veprichlamys, presumably because the radial microsculpture is similar to that in Veprichlamys species, whereas Lamprell and Whitehead (1992) placed it in Chlamys, though it lacks the shagreen microsculpture characteristic of that group. In fact, P. challengeri more closely resembles the type species of Pseudamussium in shape and convexity, in having radial sculpture, and in lacking commarginal sculpture, at least in late ontogeny.
