«Chlarnys odontota, nom. mut.
(Greek οδοντωος toothed) PLATE XIX, fig. 3. 1850. Pecten denticulatus Adams & Reeve, Zool. Voy. Samarang, Moll., p.74, pl. xxi, fig. 14 (non Hagenow).
1853. P. denticulatus Reeve, Conch. Icon. viii, Pecten sp. 138 Specific characters:— Shell small, thin, very compressed, equivalve, triangularly ovate, sub-equilateral, with height in excess of length; posterior ears small, anterior ears large. Right valve with numerous irregularly distributed, unequal, close-spaced, serrated riblets, showing some tendency to be grouped in pairs; ears with numerous riblets, likewise serrated. Left valve with 9 primary riblets, narrow, acute, and serrated with fine squarmae; secondary riblets, less prominent, but similarly denticulate, intercalated mesially between these; fine, radiating threads ornamenting all the interspaces; ears ornamented with faint, serrated riblets. Interior of shell bearing the impression of the external sculpture; hinge-area narrow, the cardinal crura inconspicuous.
Distribution:— East Indies, Gulf of Suez (A. H. Cooke, 1886, Ann Mag. Nat. Hist. [5] xvi, p. 134). Zanzibar locality:— 117. Material:— One left valve (L. 44127). Dimensions:— Length 21mm., height 22mm., inflation 2·5mm. Remarks:— The surface-sculpture of this specimen is almost identical with that of the holotype (in the British Museum (Zool. Dept.) Collection). C. Iemniscata (Reeve), a form now living in the western part of the Indian Ocean, and often collected off Mauritius, is very closely allied to C. odontota, and may prove to be the same species; Dautzenberg and Bavay consider it to be a varietal form of C. irregularis (Sowerby).» LESLIE REGINALD COX, 1927.
