PI. II, Fig. 5. 1935. Pecten (Patinopecten) kirnurai YOKOYAMA, NOMURA, Miocene Mollusca from Siogama, Northeast Honsyû, Japan. Saito Ho-on Kai Mus., Res. Bull., no. 6, p. 209.
Although this species was not figured by S. NOMURA in the above cited work, the writer had the opportunity to examine it by the courtesy of S. NOMURA, and found that a new subspecific name should be given to it.
Shell moderate in size for the P. kimurai-group, circular in outline, longer than wide and moderately or rather compressed. Disc smooth except for incremental lines of growth and provided with five to six radial ribs, which are gently elevated, broadly rounded, nearly equidistantly spaced; otherwise similar to P. kimurai. A typical specimen (figured one) measures 110.2 mm. in length, and 114.2 mm. in width (right valve). This subspecies is distinguishable from the species chiefly by the possession of a fewer number of radial ribs (5-6 in the present one and 8-9 in the typical), which are broader and prominent; otherwise the two are quite identical. Locality:— Siogama, Siogama-mati, Miyagi-gun. Reg. No. 2555 (in the collection of the Saito Ho-on Kai Museum, Sendai). Horizon:— Cultellus izumoensis-zone (Upper shell beds of S. NOMURA).» MANZIRÔ NAKAMURA, 1940
