manual of the Recent and fossil marine pelecypod mollusks of the Hawaiian
Islands. Bernice P. Bishop Museum Bulletin, 153: iv, 233 p., pls. 1-58. [p. 90, pl. 24, figs. 1-4]
«Chlamys cookei, new species (pI. 24, figs. 1-4).
Shell broadly ovate, horn colored variegated with brown and reddish blotches and dots. The right wing is strongly developed and deeply notched at its junction with the central portion to form the byssal sinus, marked on the dorsal two thirds by seven strong rough cords, which are about as wide as the spaces that seperate them. The central third is rough, and like the dorsal two thirds, marked by strong concentric lines of growth which here form a decided sinuation. The posterior auricle of the right valve is short and is also marked by seven low, poorly defined, cords which tend to bear scales. This wing is also crossed by the fine concentric sculpture. The central area of the right valve is marked by about 50 strong radiating cords, between which threads of about half their strength or less are present. The strong cords are also ornamented by irregularly distributed, poorly defined scales which, however, become quite prominent near the anterior ventral border. In addition to this, the spaces separating the cords and the cords are marked by fine incremental lines and oblique crossmarks; the latter are best shown in the spaces separating the ribs. The same type of sculpture described for the right valve obtains in the left except that the anterior wing here is not notched at its junction with the central part, but indented and this wing bears 14 threads. The posterior wing is also a little larger than in the opposite valve, and bears 10 oblique threads. In this valve, too, the crisscross sculpture in the depressed spaces between the radiating cords is more pronounced. Interior rose colored, spotted and variegated with darker shades. The hinge is transversely denticulated. There is a strong oblique fold below the ligamental area, which is also denticulated in the right valve and an equivalent denticulated groove in the left to receive this. The resilial pit is rather narrow and deep. The muscle scar is ill defined. The central portion of the shell shows the external markings within, and its ventral border is slightly fluted.
The type, U.S.N.M. Cat. No. 484166, was collected by Thaanum (Coll. No. 7818e) off the entrance to Honolulu Harbor, Oahu, in 11 fathoms. It measures: height, 34.3 mm.; length, 26.8 mm.; diameter, 9.1 mm.
