Shell allied to P. zelandiae (Gray. but flatter, with smaller ears, especially the anterior auricles; valves thinner, with about twenty-four delicate principal costae, with one or two still finer ones in the intervening grooves; all minutelv squamose, the scales more closely packed in some specimens than in others; anterior auricle of left valve having about eight thread-like squamate radiating lirae, the one forming the dorsal line stronger than the rest; the posterior auricle similarly sculptured, but lirae fewer; anterior ear of rig'ht valve with a moderately deep byssal sinus, with five radiating lirae above, the upper marginal one twice as strong as the rest; colour pale pinkish or reddish, sometimes showing a few irregular opaque white markings; interior of the valves glossy, whiter than the outside, radiately grooved and ridded. Length, 29 mm.; height, 26·5; diameter. 6·5. Stations 90 and 96, north of New Zealand: 70-100 fathoms. There is a marked difference in the si/e of the anterior auricles in this species and P. zelandiae, and besides being flatter, and more delicate in texture, the present form has a tendency towards obliquity in growth.» EDGAR ALBERT SMITH, 1915
